My final look 🙂

One of the hardest things about moving is leaving a hair salon you love behind and finding a new one you like just as much, am I right?

As you might already know, I recently made a big move from Boston to Seattle for my husband’s job., which required me to leave my favorite salon, James Joseph, and my favorite stylist, Melissa, behind. She was a dry cut master and a blow-out magician (if you live in Boston, give her a try, you won’t be disappointed). It took me about a year and a half, three mediocre hair cuts, and a few limp blowouts to find her.

I’m kind of crazy when it comes to my hair. I’m the person who would come out of the salon on prom day in high school crying because my updo didn’t have enough curls. For my wedding, I went to three hair trials (at $90 a pop) before I found someone I liked.

Where am I going with this? Well, I tend to need to explore my options before settling on someone I trust with my hair. And it just so happens that when we moved to Seattle, we moved into an “up-and-coming” neighborhood with exactly one hair salon. (Not great for someone who needs options).

So, when I was browsing the Seattle bloggers Facebook page and came across a chance to try Tousled — a new app that recently launched in the city that allows you to book in-home appointments with local hair stylists (as well as makeup and nail services) I jumped on it.

After signing up for  the service and inputting a few of my preferences, I was matched up with a stylist named Patrick. I then scheduled an appointment for a blowout, and he quickly messaged me to ask about my hair type, the style I was hoping for, what products tended to work and not work for me, and to see if I had any questions about the process. He also asked that I wash and towel-dry my hair before he arrived, and that I set up a simple workstation – a small surface near an outlet, with a mirror if I wanted to see progress as he was doing my hair. Easy enough!

The next day, Patrick promptly arrived for my blowout with everything you’d expect from a typical salon — hair clips, brushes, a blowdryer and straightener, product, etc. We set up near my desk so I could get some work done while I got my hair done – multi-tasking excellence!

About 45 minutes later, I had sleek, straight hair, and about 15 emails sent. Patrick quickly packed up, and was on his way. The whole thing couldn’t have been easier or more professional. (Did I mention you pay for the service directly through the app?) I ended up liking Patrick a lot, but I also love the idea that I can just as easily try a dozen other stylists if I wanted to. The pricing for the service is also very comparable to what you’d expect from a traditional salon.

For my first in-home salon experience, I couldn’t have been happier! If you live in Seattle, I recommend giving Tousled a try.

If you don’t, you’re  still in luck, because services like Tousled are popping up around the country. Blohaute, founded by Chicago stylist Amanda Diedrich, lets your book hairstyling appointments in the comfort of  your own home anywhere in the city. In New York, LA, and Miami, GlamSquad offers on location hair, makeup, and nail services.
